Process Begins to Fill Vacant Seat of Infamous State Senator

A special primary election was held on Tuesday to replace disgraced Republican State Senator Frank Artiles, who resigned in April after a shameful tirade he unleashed on his colleague, Sen. Audrey Gibson during an after-hours encounter at the Governors Club Lounge.

Three Republicans, two Democrats and one Independent are each vying for the chance to run for the seat that controls District 40, which encompasses much of Kendall and Glenvar Heights in Miami-Dade County. District 116 is also up for grabs in the special election. That race features two Cuban-American Republicans facing off against a Venezuelan-born Democrat, who will not appear on the ballot.
